The use of beard oils has spiked in popularity online since 2006, even if the use of this dates back to the time when Rome still ruled the old world. So, finding what is beard oil does and it’s benefits is important.
What is beard oil?
Basically, it is the oil you put on your beard to keep it healthy looking, and smelling good. It is also one of the most popular beard conditioning products that take care of the dryskin under the beard.
Beard oil used in olden times were mostly essential oil that was available in the regions in the Middle East and Europe. These oils were extracted from the fragrant parts of the part, be it root, leaves, bark or flowers. These are very light oils and would evaporate as time passed. Full bearded men would rub essential oils often to protect themselves from the elements and beard lice.
In the other part of the world, carrier oils used for beard health by Native Americans to moisturize their ‘winter beard’. Contrary to popular belief, Native Americans are able to grow beards – not full beards though. And when they did grow it, the carrier oils like Jojoba, Argan, and Almond were used to keep the beard healthy. They are completely natural and often fragrance-free.
It was only in 1930 that infused with carrier oil. This was done to dilute the light but potent essential oil. Since then applying oil for your beard was safer and you don’t have to do it as often. Carrier oil makes up about 90%-95% of your beard oil while essential oils make up the rest of the actual oil mix.

How to use beard oil?
Mentioning the benefits above, you can do all that if you make it a part of your overall beard grooming.
First, wash your beard with beard shampoo. Massage beard area for a while then rinse off. Do this every other day, at the most.
Second, spread a dab or two of beard conditioner on palms and spread over your beard. Let it stay for a minute or two, then rinse off. Do this once or twice a week- depending on how full our beard is.
Third, would be to dry off your beard – not blow dry just dry with clean cloth. Do this every time you take a bath ;).
Fourth, would be to put 2 to 3 drops of oil on your palms and rub some heat into it. Then spread over your beard and mustache. The heat helps hasten the absorption of the oil. Do this often even in between shampoo and conditioner days.
How often you use beard oil would depend on how thick and long your beard is. Beard grooming depends on your lifestyle, you can use this everyday – especially if you have beardruff. To be safe, read the label for the maker’s recommended use or dosage.
